10 Ways To Be a Happy Person with Butterkist Popcorn

Last night I went to an event at the St Martins Lane Hotel hosted by Butterkist. In the last 12 months they launched new flavours and the latest news is that Butterkist branding has been refreshed so the packs have a fresh new modern look.  Did you know that Butterkist is a British Company and all the popcorn is made in Pontefract! I am sure it was the American style branding that had led me to believe it was American but I am delighted that it is ‘ours’.

Web

We started by trying all the new flavours… The Salted Caramel and the Yoghurt Popcorn were so so good! Butterkist are mostly famous for the Toffee Popcorn but their ‘Cinema Sweet Popcorn’ actually won a blind taste test out of all the sweet popcorns on the market!

POPCORN

After the taste testing, there was a half hour talk by the ‘Doctor of Happiness’ Andy Cope. He delivered fascinating facts and figures that he had learnt over his 12 year PHD on the subject of happiness.

img_2448-2

A survey of 1500 adults by Butterkist revealed –

  • The average adult feels happiness 8 times per day, 432 times a year.
  • Early forties is the happiest we will ever be with 41 being pin pointed as the best year of our lives.
  • Only 16% of those polled said work made them happy.
  • More than 8/10 said they would choose a night in with loved ones over a raucous night out.
  • The average adult considers five people in their life to be very good friends.
  • Family, friends, hobbies and interests were among the things that made Brits happy with family coming top for 7/10 surveyed.

What Makes Us Unhappy?

Repetition – we become habituated and fixated on order & routine.

Busyness

Exhaustion (usually from busyness)

News (24 hrs a day dripped to us)

Weather (i.e. drizzle)

Facts on Happiness

Alot of people have destination addiction and think they will be happy when they get there i.e. married, on holiday, the new job but we have to be content in the moment.

happiness-levels-peak-when-we-spend-time-with-those-we-love-3

The Danes have mastered this with the popular Hygge movement where they slow down and enjoy simple pleasures and live in the moment.

We are alive on average 4000 weeks so ‘getting through’ 3 weeks until you go on holiday is a waste of a lot of your life!

Andy spoke of ‘Mood Hoovers’ who zap your happiness and are always grumbling. This made me laugh so much as it is easy to be negative and not appreciate what you have.

Ideas

Barbecuing in the garden whilst the children play

Movie night with the family (sharing Butterkist Popcorn!)

Reading a story to your children, enjoying the moment

A sing song in the car

Feet up with a glass of wine after a long day

Box set with a loved one

Having a dance in the kitchen

Playing cricket in the park

Going on a bike ride together

This made the kids happy this morning!

Table

How Do We Become More Happy

Rewire your brain and PRACTICE.

If you are happy, it will wear off on those around you, who will then pass the happiness vibe to others so by you being happy in the morning at breakfast for example, your kids will be happier and their teacher will be happier as result and when they get home they will pass this happiness to their loved one.

This could change the world!!!

In this digital age it is imperative to share happy moments and spending time together.

Aisle of Wonder at Stratford Westfield

I was thrilled to be asked by Nestle Breakfast Cereals to visit their recent pop up cereal experience – Aisle of Wonder.  After a great time at Thyme in Gloucestershire, I was keen to see what they have been up to. Situated smack bang in the heart of the Westfield in Stratford (2nd floor by John Lewis) the pop up looks like machinery from Willy Wonka’s factory – it is so fun and interactive.

POPUP

Tubes above your head are filled with Nestle cereal finishing in a pick n mix style to enable you to choose a cocktail of cereals, finished with a selection of milks and toppings.

Aisle Of wonder

As a family, cereal is a staple in the morning so we don’t have to persuaded, although after a good chat with a nutritionist, I and firmly on the wholegrain band wagon, that Nestle includes in their breakfast cereals with the green banner.

What Does Whole Grain Actually Mean?

Whole Grain cereals basically mean that they contain all three parts of the grain – the germ, the endosperm and the bran.

By having all three you are receiving fibre from the bran and the vitamins especially Vitamin B from the germ.

If something is refined, the top and middle layer is removed leaving just the endosperm.

With breakfast below, you are getting calcium, nutrients and wholegrain and no need to add extra sugar (like we tend to with porridge so it is counter productive!)

If you are feeling flush, you can buy a personalised box of Shreddies, Cheerios or Shredded Wheat – each only £3 and also filled with the relevant cereal.

Cereal Boxes

The event runs for 2 weeks for the second year in a row and the aim of the pop up is to show the range and ways you can eat cereal.

Fuel your visit to the Westfield at the Aisle of Wonder and then head to the Olympic Park.Well, that’s what we are doing!

GIVEAWAY

To win your own personalised box of cereal – head over to Instagram to enter.

Aisle of Wonder at Stratford Westfield

Runs Until 23rd April.

At Home

Shaving Foam Fun: simple yet effective, this is an excellent way to encourage emergent writing or letter/number formation. Cover a big tray in shaving foam and let your Little Thinker get messy whilst practicing their school work. When I taught Reception, the children’s increased enthusiasm to write (especially boys) when shaving foam was involved was amazing to see. My biggest tip would be to keep learning fun, interactive and sensory; when you do this the results are amazing! It’ll leave your house smelling delicious too!

Download Virry : children can discover a world of animal adventures through wild animal live cameras, interactive videos and countless hours of captivating entertainment and learning! Created in collaboration with leading child development researchers and world-renowned wildlife experts, Virry is specifically designed for animal lovers aged 2–7 years olds with a hunger to explore and discover the animal kingdom. Trusted by parents and educators around the world, you can download their app via the App Store.

Hassle Free Dinner Parties at Wyld Cookery School

On Tuesday evening we had a wonderful evening with Fran and her team at Wyld Cookery School in Wandsworth. We were invited to their ‘Hassle Free Dinner Parties’ evening which was the final instalment of the 4 week Wyld Cookery Club Evening Course, that also covers Asian Adventures, 30 Minute Meals and One Pot Wonders.

We were greeted with a glass of top plonk (or bottled beer much my husbands delight!) and given the outline and menu for the evening to have a look at before we got cracking.

img_2661

We were introduced to the rest of the group who despite having spent the last 3 weeks together were friendly and inclusive. There was a mix of ages and both men and women.

img_2669

Fran who started up the school 2 years ago gave a brief introduction on the order of the evening.  Starting with a demonstration, then time to cook yourself and finished off with a lovely sit down meal of the goodies you have just cooked.

img_2667

Fran is a cool chick who made the evening fun and VERY informative. She made the demo’s lively and her patience with all the questions and inability to follow recipe’s was pretty impressive!

After the wonderful demo, we cracked on and had a go at cooking Chicken With Mild Mushrooms.

img_2675

Check out the Hazelnut and Meringue cake.

img_2677

Alex rolling his roulade – check out the pinky!

img_2681

Fran was so generous with her tips and I felt of wave of inspiration after having felt so stale in the kitchen for the last few (6) years.

  • Chop the stalks if your beans in the bag
  • Use banana shaped shallots – much easier to chop
  • Whack in a whole crushed garlic (without peeling) to your butter to make garlic butter.
  • Use grease proof paper rather than tinfoil to cook meat (I did wonder why my sausages always stuck to the foil!)
  • Use portobello mushrooms or an alternative but never the cheap white closed cup mushrooms that have no flavour.
  • Stock Pots are a game changer.
  • Soak your dried wild mushrooms for 20 minutes and then, to avoid getting gritty bits in your dish, either strain the liquid through a muslin or discard the last inch of juice – this is especially important when cooking a risotto
  • Always fry your chicken thigh skin down to crisp it up and you don’t need fat – there is enough on the skin.
  • Icing sugar is a the best way to sweeten cream, not caster sugar.

Oh I could go on! You may know alot of this but I have never been to a cooking school and now have a bit of a bug to more.

I reckon the only way to learn properly is by doing and I highly recommend the friendly relaxed and informative way like Wyld Cookery School conducts their courses.

They also only first class ingredients and you also get to take supper home for the next night so it is super duper bang for your buck.

My highlight was the supper at end and also learning to make hollandaise sauce! Who would have thought!

img_2684

The next evening course starts on March 21st so book yourself in or give it to someone close to you as a gift. What a great Valentine’s Day present and you will reap the rewards!

There are also some great courses for youngsters.

Wyld Seasonaire

They also do a Gap Year Course to become a chalet boy/girl.

A no-nonsense, intensive two-week cookery course to give you everything you need to make the most of your Ski Job.

Wyld Essentials

They are approved D of E provider for the who need to complete their Duke of Edinburgh award.

The course runs Monday to Friday with a maximum of 14 students. They enjoy lunch together every day, with breakfast on Fridays and on their first Thursday night they host a ‘Supper Party’ for their invited guests at the school. The hours are Monday 9.30am – 4.30pm and Tuesday to Friday have a 9am start!

The Wyld Essentials Cookery Course

There is also a course to get students culinary ready before they go their own way.

This is the ideal cookery course for anyone about to go to college, university, leaving halls of residence or simply leaving home and left to fend for themselves. The Wyld Essentials Cookery Course is a fun and hand’s on programme which will show you how to flip a dinner party on a budget, create a killer roast and smash a lasagna. Boiled, roasted, baked or steamed like everything we do, we cut out the nonsense and get into the detail that will leave you armed with a solid menu repertoire and confidence to tackle most recipes you put your hand to.

What’s On Television For Kids Over Christmas?

Last year I did a summary of programs and films over the festive period (mostly terrestrial)  and some of you have asked for it again as you found it helpful to have it all in one place. To be fair, a monkey could do this (going through the Radio Times) picking a few programs for the kids, alas – there are no monkeys to do it, so it’s down to me. (We do it anyway actually,  so I am so happy to share it with you!) Be warned however, I am no TV Critic so don’t blame me if some things are rubbish!

Anyway, I hope you find it as helpful as last year.

Just quickly – yesterday’s post has had great feedback form you – thank you!! If you missed it you can catch it here  8 Tips For a Happy Christmas With Your Other Half

We are going to try and remember to Sky Plus this and a few  other favourites before we head off for Christmas as I forgot last year!

I know most people have Netflicks, Amazon Prime etc for movies on demand but I think Christmas is the one time of year it is good make your children wait for something special on TV.

What do you think?

Anyway, have a very Happy Happy Christmas! xx

Teach Your Children About Giving This Christmas

‘I want that for Christmas…’ for the 17th time during the adverts for Peppa Pig was starting to pain me. So we had the chat. ‘Some children don’t even have a roof over their head, let alone Christmas presents…’ The two year old drew a blank, but the boys got it! I saw an opportunity…

They really wanted to give something this Christmas – so I looked into a few ways they could do that. I hope you will find this rather refreshing after all the recent posts on Gifts!

Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal

Go and buy a few nice presents and drop them at your nearest Salvation Army. The Salvation Army are receiving new unwrapped gifts to distribute to adults and children who are homeless this Christmas.

Christian Aid Worldwide Christmas Appeal

Go online and choose a practical present for people fleeing violence this Christmas.  A hygiene kit, a pair of boots and a days worth of food for a Syrian Refugee.  It will also aid you in explaining that most things we take for granted.

Operation Christmas Child with Shoebox World

It’s too late to buy and send a real shoebox filled with treats, so go online and pack a virtual one for a child which they can choose the gender and age for. This then will become a tangible shoebox to children around the world.

I thought  The Wellspring Charity Foundation PND Hamper was worth a mention too.

Through The Wellspring Charity Foundation PND Hamper Fighting Poverty you can donate a hamper to someone who is in financial difficulty who you suspect has PND or has been diagnosed with PND. There is even an option nominate yourself.

Another way you can donate is the NSPCC Letter To Santa

Each letter is £5 which goes straight to the NSPCC Christmas Campaign and your child will receive a personalised letter from Father Christmas.  No excuse not to really!

Lastly, The Mayor of London website is a great resource to narrow down your search and find opportunities to volunteer in your borough.

Remember, actions speak louder than words and the best way to teach your children is through example, so go and volunteer, buy some presents or get online.

You could even just wear your slippers for Shelter today!

If you know of any other  2016 Christmas Campaigns, please let me know and I will add them xx

11 Ideas To Prepare You For Advent

As I am nearly half way through my Gift Guides, most of my Christmas posts will be wrapped up before December. So bear with me if you are slightly over my Christmas recommendations – this advent won’t last forever and I have some good fashion & activity round ups in the pipe line.

So for those that are as excited as a 6 year old boy on Christmas eve, I would like to introduce two charming young men who have set up From Tree To You.

They have just left uni and whilst looking for a job (contact them if you have any start ups that need a helping hand!), they have set up a Christmas Tree delivery service across London.

They aren’t any old Christmas trees, they are Fir Nordrum Trees which are bushy, green and non drop.

flyer-front-jpeg

They will deliver, unload and position the finest tree for you on the following 3 dates –

1st December

4th December

11th December

See prices below…

flyer-back-jpeg

THEY WILL ALSO BE DRESSED UP AS FATHER CHRISTMAS AND RUDOLPH SO MAKE SURE THE KIDS ARE AT HOME!!

george-photo-jpeg

If you aren’t happy with the tree (you will be – I am delighted by mine that is currently propped against the fence in the garden) they will happily replace it.

Trees ordered by 25th November will get a 5% discount. BTW They also sell stands…

Please order your tree from this start up and spread the festive love –

Contact them through Facebook / ftty2016@gmail.com / 07843 645 006

Whilst I am on the subject of preparing for Christmas, fellow Mummy Blogger, Laura Rutherhood has painted some beautiful wreath paintings. They are only £18 and you can also get them personalised in the middle of the wreath!

Not one for a cheesy Christmas jumper, I thought this company was worth a mention as they are actually pretty lovely, especially if you want to give a little nod to Santa.

Pearl & Earl have a range of sweaters with fun logo’s on. This is my favourite and at £35 I might just get it!

I am also loving the new advent of unique calendars that have sprung up this year. Gone are the days of a simple chocolate one, let lone a biblical picture one (although I still think they should have one as the pictures are good prompts to tell the Christmas story – we mustn’t forget what Christmas is actually about!) Anyway, I diversify.

Now, Elf On The Shelf. Are you one of those families? I haven’t been but I think I might be this year. Anything to keep them on the straight and narrow!

Elf For Christmas £24.99

Elf For Christmas is definitely the sweetest elf on the shelf. Elf For Christmas, it also includes certificates, reward charts, stickers, arrival letter and a letter to Santa. The kids will love it!
